Armenia on Roman coins and maps of the Roman Empire

ABOUT ARMENIA, HISTORY OF ARMENIA, WORLD HISTO

By a miracle, banknotes that have survived and have come down to the present day from the depth of ages can tell a lot of interesting things about oblivion to historical events or political figures.

In this sense, three old Roman coins dating from the second century of our era are extremely entertaining. Let us try to decipher peculiar historical rebuses minted on them.

In that difficult and tangled era for Armenia, King Tigran V Sohemos ascended to the Armenian throne as many as two times (144-161 and 164-186 AD). For the first time the royal crown went to him from the hands of the Roman emperor Antonín Pius (Antoninus Pius). This event is depicted on the first bronze coin: on the obverse (the main side of the coin) the emperor and his name are depicted, and on the reverse (reverse side) – the coronation of Sochemos and an inscription in Latin: “Tsar of Armenia gave” (Rex Armen Dat). After the death of Emperor Antonin Pius, the Parthian army makes an invasion of Great Armenia, delivers a crushing blow to Sohemos and transfers power to his protégé, Tsar Bakura I, and Sohemos moves to Rome.

A year later, Rome defeats the Parthians, after which, according to the treaty, the Western part of Mesopotamia passes to the Roman Empire, and Armenia is proclaimed independent, but the king appointed by Rome must govern it. Thus, in 164, the Romans crowned Tigran V Sochemos for the second time. During this period, Lucius Verus and Marcus Aurelius reigned simultaneously. Lucius Verus was nicknamed “Armeniakus” (Armeniacus) after the seizure of Armenia by the Roman army.

The emperor Lucius Ver was minted on the Aver gold coin and his name is indicated, and the second coronation of Sohemos and the inscription in Latin “Tsar of Armenia gave” are marked on the reverse.

On the front of the last silver coin, Lucius Ver is depicted, and on the back, an Armenian is depicted as a symbol of Armenia and the inscription “Armen” is minted.
