Yerevan recently celebrated its 2800th anniversary. However, in fact, on the site of the current capital of Armenia, people lived much earlier – at least 100,000 years ago.

The oldest settlement in Yerevan was discovered by accident, just 50 years ago. Then passers-by accidentally discovered in one of the favorite places of recreation of the capital’s residents – Lake Yerevan, the remains of bones and skeletons.

The relevant authorities responded to the find of citizens and found out that the bones are the remains of a rhinoceros, bear, wild bull, which are more than 70,000 years old.

It turned out that they were taken out of a cave located on the shore of Lake Yerevan. This cave was the home of primitive man.

In Soviet times, a homeless old man settled in a cave. Somehow he decided to tidy up in his home, taking out all the “unnecessary” things and remains from there. Thanks to this accident, archaeologists learned about the existence of a cave of historical interest.

“More than a thousand stone tools, throwing mines, spearheads, trowels, anthropological artifacts, the number of which reaches 2500, were discovered in the cave,” says Angela Teryan, head of the Department of Ancient and Medieval History of the Museum of History of Yerevan.

The materials led scientists to the idea that the Yerevan cave was used for primitive hunters – masons, not as a dwelling, but as a “workshop-parking”.

A parking lot was also discovered in the center of the cave. Scientists have suggested that this find is over 48,000 years old. At the same time, in Soviet times, archaeologists studied only a few layers. More ancient layers remained under the cover of the earth and are still unexplored. According to experts, these are more ancient layers with more than 100 thousand years of history.

Meanwhile, on the shore of Lake Yerevan there are 4-5 more similar caves, but today they are hidden under a layer of mud and debris, and no one is engaged in their study. It turns out that historical treasures that covered a distance of 100,000 years in independent Armenia can disappear without a trace.
