In August 1985, the UN Subcommittee on Prevention and Protection of Minority Discrimination adopted for its 38th session (Geneva) a report on the genocide, the 24th paragraph of which characterized “the Ottoman massacre of Armenians in 1915-16” as an example of genocide. Many are unaware of what preceded and followed the adoption of this resolution. For the first time, Harut Sassounian, the editor-in-chief of the California Courier newspaper, exemplifies the remarkable details of how he succeeded in appointing a pro-English English speaker as the Turks came as a surprise and a number of other interesting episodes about his time working in Geneva at the UN.
