Greece, Cyprus and Israel, united against Turkey
23 December 2019 – POLICY:
Greece, the Republic of Cyprus and Israel announced that they will sign an agreement on January 2 for the construction of the EastMed gas pipeline to strengthen co-operation in the field of energy in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Greek Prime Minister Kiriakos Micotakis, Cypriot President Nikos Anastasiades and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will attend the signing ceremony in Athens, the Greek government said in a statement.
The pipeline, which is planned to be 1900 kilometers long, is expected to transport 9 to 12 million cubic meters of natural gas to Europe in one year. The EastMed pipeline, which will start from natural gas reserves off the Levant basin in Israel, will run along the Mediterranean Sea, stretching to the island of Crete and Italy through the mainland of Greece.
EastMed is expected to meet 10 percent of the European Union’s (EU) natural gas demand and reduce European countries’ energy dependence on Russia.
Greece, Cyprus and Israel reached an agreement at a meeting in Israel last March, establishing a tripartite mechanism for the development of regional co-operation for the pipeline. The meeting was attended by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
In the energy transportation projects that could bring the three countries of the European continent a critical situation, which continues drilling activities in the Eastern Mediterranean Turkey’s being able to provide control in the region.
