Thirty years ago, from January 13 to 19, 1990, tens of thousands of Armenians were brutally killed or forcibly displaced in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan. Following the 6-day massacre against the Armenians, there were almost no Armenians in the city, which previously had 250,000 Armenians.
The massacre against Armenians from January 13 to 19 was organized by the Azerbaijani People’s Front and carried out under the auspices of the Azerbaijani government.
Intolerance towards Armenians in Azerbaijan only increased considerably in 1988-1989. After a rally attended by thousands of people on January 13, 1990, the crowd began to attack, beat, kill, rape, throw out the windows and even burn them to the right and people flocked to Armenian homes at predetermined addresses . Mikhail Gorbachev, who remained silent for the last 6 days of the atrocities, signed a decree on the declaration of the state of emergency on January 19, when the danger of weakening of Soviet power appeared in Azerbaijan.
Although the exact number of Armenians killed in Baku on these days is not known due to the fact that actual data is kept and not disclosed, at least 500 to 600,000 Armenians were massacred in that country in 1988-1990 according to different sources. The repression and massacre against the Armenians continued after January 1990 and ultimately led to the complete disarmenianization of Baku.
Despite Azerbaijan’s denial policy, in 1990 the massacres and massacres of Armenians in Baku, Sumgaeit and Kirovabad (Ganja) were condemned by international institutions and organizations.
