In Azerbaijan soldiers of Talysh origin are used as “cannon fodder” and sent to the Armenian-Azeri front at the border of Artsakh or Armenia, said Mirnaib Zabarov, a Talysh living in Azerbaijan. According to the latter, Baku places Talysh soldiers at the front and the majority of Azeri soldiers on the front are representatives of national minorities.

According to Zabarov, Azerbaijan regularly violates the rights of minorities living in the country and, following these pressures, in recent years more than 300,000 Talysh have left Azerbaijan, where the word “Talysh” is forbidden.

Baku is erasing traces of the cultural heritage of this people of Iranian origin living on the banks of the Caspian in the south-east of Azerbaijan and in the north-east of Iran.

There are more than a million Talysh in the region, including nearly 400,000 in Azerbaijan, even though the authorities officially mention the figure of 76,000. Mr. Zabarov says that the Azeris hate the national minorities living in the country.

“No one is forcing them to live in Azerbaijan and if they don’t like it they have to leave it,” say many Azerbaijanis from official circles.

Under these conditions, the independence of the Armenians of Artsakh from the Azeri oppressive yoke was a necessity and a pledge of life …
