The secretary general of NATO announced Thursday the opening of an investigation into the incident denounced by France with Turkish ships during an operation to control the UN embargo on arms deliveries to Libya.
“NATO military authorities will investigate to clarify the situation and shed light on the incident,” said Jens Stoltenberg after a meeting of Alliance defense ministers.
“I think this is the best way, now, to do it, to really clarify what happened,” he added. Jens Stoltenberg stressed the need to respect the United Nations embargo. “NATO supports the implementation of the UN decision to impose an arms embargo on Libya. We support the efforts of the United Nations to find a solution to the conflict, ”he said.
France denounced Turkey’s “extremely aggressive” behavior against a French frigate engaged in a NATO mission in the Mediterranean during an attempt to control a cargo ship suspected of transporting weapons to Libya.
