THE SARCOPHAGUS OF KING GREGOIRE II OF SYUNIK

Among the approximately 50 stone monuments exhibited in the courtyard of the SISIAN History Museum is a basalt sarcophagus, one of the narrowest of which is a record. The sarcophagus was accidentally discovered in 1985 during construction work in the village of SHAKI (today SHAKE), 6 km west of Sisian.

According to Arsen Harutyunyan, a scientist and lithographer who studied the monuments in the courtyard of the Museum of History, the lithography of the sarcophagus reads as follows:

Based on the archaeological characteristics of the inscriptions on the tombstone, the researcher believes that it was written in the 11th-12th centuries. According to him, the sarcophagus belonged to Grigor II, the penultimate king of Syunik and the Baghk kingdom.

In his book History of Sisak, Stepanos Orbelyan, a thirteenth-century historian, made reference to the names of the throne kings and Syuniks of Syunik, which existed in 987-1170, and to the important events that took place in them under the title < >. According to this, King Gregory, mentioned in the lithography of the sarcophagus, was the eldest of the four sons of King Sennacherib, whose historian reports: “After his death, his son, Gregory, reigned as king.”

St. According to Orbelyan, Grigor II died in 1166. The historian does not provide any other information on the king. It is difficult to say under what circumstances Gregory II died, but it is clear that the Turks-Seljuk raids could finally exhaust the king, which is why the mention of the word “refined” in the inscription is conditioned.

It should be noted that the lithograph was found on the side of the sarcophagus, which suggests that it was not buried in the ground, but after being tightly closed with a cover, it was placed in a mausoleum at Shake, which has not been preserved.

The text was written according to ARSEN HARUTYUNYAN, Sisian N. Records of the Museum of History after Adonts, magazine “Vem”, n ° 2, Yerevan, 2019, article (pp. 182-184).
