RA MFA Spokeswoman Commented on Turkish Government’s Decision to Change Status of Hagia Sophia
July 11, 2020
Press Secretary of the RA Ministry of Foreign Affairs Anna Naghdalyan. commented on the decision of the Turkish authorities to change the status of Hagia Sophia.
Armenpress presents the comment of the press secretary of the RA MFA.
“We are deeply concerned about the decision of the Turkish authorities to turn the Hagia Sophia Museum, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, into a mosque.
Hagia Sophia is not only a historical and cultural monument. Throughout its history, it has had various religious, cultural, and political meanings.
The assignment of the status of the museum to the Hagia Sophia and its inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List made it possible not to be a symbol of the clash of civilizations, but a symbol of cooperation and unity of mankind. It is regrettable to note that the latest decision of the Turkish authorities closes the page of this important symbol and mission in the history of Hagia Sophia.
This decision creates a dangerous precedent for a significant change in the nature and purpose of UNESCO World Heritage and makes it necessary to monitor the international community and, in particular, UNESCO with the aim of preserving historical sites with a similar status in Turkey. ”
