The Armenians celebrate the liberation of Shushi on 8-9 May 1992, which was a breaking point in the ongoing war and for the victory.

The victory in the battle for Shushi was not just a military victory, an expression of the martial art when the Armenian forces were able to liberate a town despite the enemy’s outnumbering personnel, arsenal, as well as the geographical position.

Shushi was the historical return of the Armenian people or return among the winner nations, in addition to the status of an independent state. This circumstance is not just emotional as it may seem at first sight. Victories in the life of peoples, states are not only a source of excitement, emotional rise but also political-military capital in the complex system of international relations.

Then, unfortunately, the Armenian “elite” was not only unable or unwilling to multiply this capital after the war, at peace time, but also “successfully” wasted it. The huge political-military and moral capital was directed not to the development of the state but of a ruling system which was against the state and the priorities, challenges and opportunities which were in and around Armenia-Artsakh.

Nevertheless, the political-military capital gained through the historical return among winner nations allowed keeping the state from irreversible disasters despite a quarter of a century of existence of a system that was against the national interests and goals for which the public sometimes had to pay an expensive price at different stages of this period, including human lives, to prevent a disaster in the state.

The velvet revolution in April 2018, along with the 30thanniversary of the Artsakh movement, hence the historical return of the Armenian people, was a breath of fresh air, strengthening our place among the winners and returning what had been wasted during 25 years.

It is important to see the ground under this opportunity, the symbolic victory of Shushi. There is a lot of global Armenian energy concentrated here. The task now is to further generate energy and distribute it equally towards the internal and external components of the life of Armenians worldwide.
