VOROTN BERD (VOROTNABERD)

20 km east of the town of SISIAN, on the right bank of the Vorotan River, is the Vorotn Fortress, one of the most impregnable and famous fortresses of early medieval ARMENIA.

The fortress was first mentioned among the fortresses liberated by the Armenian rebels from the Persian troops in 450. In the 10th-11th centuries, the fortress guarded and protected the northern borders of the SYUNIK-BAGHK kingdom.

1104-1211 The fortress was ruled by Turkish-Seljuk conquerors.

After their liberation in the 13th-14th centuries, the VOROTN fortress was in the hands of the ORBELYANS. 1386 It was captured by Lenktemur’s troops.

VOROTNABERD also played an important role in the liberation war of the Armenians of Syunik led by DAVID BEK against the Persian-Turkish dictators in the 1720s.
That is why in the colloquial language of the people it is also called “DAVID BEKI FORTRESS”.

The fortress is now in ruins. There are rocky rocks on its three sides, only the south-western side is fenced.
The citadel is located in the south-eastern part of the fortress, which is about 50 meters above the total area of the fortress.
In the eastern part of the Citadel there are remains of a watchtower and a chapel.
It was located here at the head of the subway leading to the Vorotan River.
