Armenia’s declaration of independence 30 years

Exactly 30 years ago, on this day, the citizens of Soviet Armenia made a historic decision, choosing independence as the only possible status, a sustainable path to the country’s further development.
According to Armenpress, the Declaration of Independence of Armenia, adopted by the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR on August 23, 1990, became not only an expression of the centuries-old dream of the Armenian people to restore their independent state, but also an attempt to legally formalize the de facto unification of Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh.
The declaration of independence was based on the joint decision of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR and the National Council of Nagorno-Karabakh on December 1, 1989 “On the reunification of the Armenian SSR and Nagorno-Karabakh.”
“The Supreme Council of the Armenian SSR, expressing the united will of the people of Armenia, realizing its responsibility before the fate of the Armenian people, in fulfilling the desires of all Armenians, in restoring historical justice, proceeding from the principles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, well-known norms of international law, realizing the rights of nations, based on the joint decision of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR and the National Council of Nagorno-Karabakh “On the reunification of the Armenian SSR and Nagorno-Karabakh” of December 1, 1989, developing the democratic traditions of the independent Republic of Armenia, created on May 28, 1918, setting the task of creating a democratic, legal society, “PROVINCES the beginning the process of establishing independent statehood, ”reads the Declaration of Independence of the Republic of Armenia.
It consists of 12 items. About a year after the adoption of the Declaration, on September 21, 1991, a referendum on independence was held in Armenia, as a result of which the Third Republic of Armenia was formed.
