The situation in the eastern Mediterranean has deteriorated dangerously in the context of major offshore gas drilling projects.

As the Russian channel Demiurge tg reports, Turkey rejects the EU ultimatum and threatens to wage war, News-Front reports.

“If Greece extends its maritime borders in the Aegean Sea, it will cause war,” Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said on August 29.

The announcement came a day after EU member states decided to impose sanctions on Turkey if Ankara does not withdraw its navies from the eastern Mediterranean.

Greece will double, up to 12 nautical miles, to expand its territorial waters to the west on the basis of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, not signed by Ankara. Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis also does not rule out a similar move on the eastern side – towards the border with Turkey.

“In the Aegean Sea, Greece cannot extend its borders to 12 miles. This is the reason for the war (casus belli). We will not allow Greece to extend its territorial waters from 6 to 12 miles. I’m absolutely clear, ”Cavusoglu commented on the Greeks’ plans.
