President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin emphasizes that the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict began not just as an interstate conflict and a struggle for territory, it began with ethnic confrontation. As reported by Armenpress, the Russian President said this at a meeting of the Valdai Club.

“Unfortunately, it is a fact when in Sumgait and then in Nagorno-Karabakh, cruel crimes were committed against the Armenian people. We must take all this into account as a whole, ”Putin said.

He added that over the years, Russia has proposed a variety of options for resolving this crisis in order to stabilize the situation for a long historical perspective.

“Trust me, it was a hard rapprochement job. At some moments it seemed that just a little more, one more step and we would find a solution. Unfortunately, this did not happen and today we have a conflict in its worst form. And the tragedy is that people are dying, ”the President of the Russian Federation stressed.

Vladimir Putin stressed that thousands of people have died.

The President of Russia drew attention to the fact that over 10 years of the war in Afghanistan, 13 thousand people died, and the losses in this short period – thousands.

“And how many are injured, how many people are suffering, children. This is a special situation for us, ”Putin stressed.

He added that the Minsk Group has been created, co-chaired by Russia, France and the United States, which are responsible for the negotiation process. According to the President of Russia, it is obvious that all the participants in this process sincerely want a solution to the situation, but no one is interested in this as much as Russia, because all this is happening before their eyes.

“All participants in the negotiation process sincerely strive for the situation to be settled, but no one is more interested in this than Russia. I would very much like this compromise to be found. You know, I am in very close contact with President Aliyev and with Prime Minister Pashinyan. I talk to them on the phone several times a day. Our foreign minister, defense minister, heads of special services are in constant contact. The foreign ministers of both countries came to visit us again. They meet in Washington on the 23rd. I very much hope that our American partners will act in unison with us and help the settlement. Let’s hope for the best, ”Putin concluded.
