During the excavations carried out in Kanagegh ancient site in the territory of Karmirgyugh community of Gegharkunik region of Armenia (the monument dates back to 15-14 BC-7-6 centuries AD), bronze rings, part of a bracelet and beads were found from the tombs.

As reported by the “Historical-Cultural Reserve-Museum և Historical Environment Protection Service”, the head of the excavations, Scientific Secretary of the “Historical-Cultural Reserve-Museum-Historical Protection Service” SNCO, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor Ashot Piliposyan says that over the years In all probability, a considerable amount of luxury items and jewelry were taken from the tomb chamber.

“The surface of the tomb is damaged, they tried to move the slabs, but probably could not because of the weight. They had tried to enter the mausoleum. The treasure hunters have partially destroyed several tombs, being hostile to the historical and cultural heritage of our ancestors, ”says Piliposyan.

According to him, after removing the excess mound, it became clear that the mausoleum has a cromlech with a diameter of about 14 meters (a type of Bronze Age structure). According to the head of the excavations, the tomb was probably buried again in ancient times and pottery was placed with the deceased. The funeral was group ․ The owner of the tomb was lying alone, with his legs bent at the back, and there were 7-8 human skeletons at his feet.

“There was definitely a mass burial, which testifies to the sacrifices made in the Shan basin at the time,” said the head of the excavations.

The finds from Kanagegh in previous years are kept in the fund of “Erebuni” historical-archaeological reserve-museum. The archeological material found from these excavations will also be handed over to “Erebuni” museum. The anthropological material will be studied by Hasmik Simonyan, a member of the expedition, anthropologist of the SNCO. The excavations will continue next year as well. The excavations were carried out with the financial support of the Science Committee of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Armenia and the “Erebuni” Historical-Archaeological Reserve-Museum, an infrastructure maintenance and development program.

Famous archaeologist Grigor Areshyan excavated the monument in the 1980s, and Ashot Piliposyan worked at the site in 1998-2004.
