100 years ago, today, Berlin, Hardenbergstraße…
On March 15, 1921 Soghomon Tehlirian, a 24-year-old Armenian man, who lost his entire family in the Armenian Genocide, assassinated Talaat Pasha, one of the key orchestrators of those mass ethnic killings.
The assassination was a part of a revenge plan, called Operation Nemesis.
Soghomon Tehlirian was immediately arrested.
When the judge asked Soghomon Tehlirian if he felt any sort of guilt, he said:
“I do not consider myself guilty because my conscience is clear… I have killed a man. But I am not a murderer”.
After a two-day trial in a German court, Soghomon Tehlirian found not guilty and was released.
